La Ceiba sits right where the mountains meet the Caribbean, which makes it one of the best home bases in Honduras for a self-driven adventure. With your own rental car, you can move at your own pace and reach spots that are hard to get to on public transport. Here are five of our favorite day trips.
1. Pico Bonito National Park
Just a short drive from downtown La Ceiba, Pico Bonito is one of Honduras' largest protected areas, with waterfalls, hiking trails and a canopy of cloud forest climbing toward the peak that gives the park its name. Bring good shoes and plan for a half or full day depending on which trail you choose.
2. Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge
West of La Ceiba, this wetland reserve is one of the best places on the north coast to spot manatees, howler monkeys and hundreds of bird species. The last stretch is usually done by boat or rail-cart, so drive to the reserve's entrance and park there before continuing in.
3. Sambo Creek and the Garífuna coast
Follow the coastal road east of La Ceiba to reach Garífuna beach communities like Sambo Creek, known for laid-back beach restaurants and fresh seafood. It's an easy, scenic drive that works well as a half-day trip.
4. Tela
About an hour west along the coastal highway, Tela has calm beaches and is the gateway to the Punta Sal / Jeanette Kawas National Park. It's a comfortable day trip, or an overnight if you want more time on the sand.
5. San Pedro Sula
Roughly two hours inland, San Pedro Sula is Honduras' industrial and commercial hub, with shopping, museums and easy connections onward. It's a good option if you need a change of pace from beach and jungle.
Whichever route you pick, reserve your car a few days ahead during high season, and check the fuel and spare-tire situation before heading out to more remote spots. Browse our fleet to find the right vehicle for your trip.
