Getting there
Most day trips to Cayos Cochinos depart by boat from Sambo Creek, a Garifuna coastal community about 20–30 minutes east of La Ceiba by car. The crossing takes roughly 45 minutes. Because the sea tends to get choppier as the day goes on, tours generally leave early — often around 8am — and head back to the mainland by mid-afternoon.
What's out there
Cayos Cochinos is a protected marine reserve made up of two small islands and around a dozen coral cays, several of which are home to Garifuna fishing communities — Cayo Chachauate is the best known. Expect snorkeling over well-preserved reef, a chance to walk through the cays' forest (keep an eye out for the native pink boa), and the option to buy freshly grilled fish for lunch from the local community.
Planning your trip
- Book a tour rather than going independently — most visitors go with a local operator that handles the boat, guide, and stops, since arranging a private charter can be harder on short notice.
- Bring reef-safe sunscreen — the reef here is part of a protected reserve.
- Pack cash for the conservation fee charged on some of the cays and for lunch with the local community.
